I just read an article where the author felt that Churches where people were held captive by guilt and condemnation and he was encouraging folks to be barbarians and freed tigers.
While I freely confess that there are many tyrants, wardens, and greed mongers in pulpits, I also fear that many who wish to break away from those swing the pendulum too far the other way and join the “invisible” church or become Outback Christians who think “no rules, just right” is what grace is meant to be. The balance is that while we are under grace there are torahs, doctrines, dogmas, laws that are well laid out and we need to follow, for if we don’t it does lead to guilt and other negative things. There was grace under law and there are rules or laws under grace. It seems that the Church has been fighting the two extremes (and losing) for centuries.
Paul said that servant was the Lord’s freeman and the freeman was the Lord’s servant. Many just want to be the freeman and make God their servant as they tell Him what goes and doesn’t go in the age of grace. That attitude has weakened the Gospel message and the impact the Church has had on this present age. Hard to be a free ranging tiger or a barbarian when we are bought with a price, we are not our own. We are bound in a sense that we are created unto good works and are to maintain sound doctrine. We are free in that we have the right to walk as children of God and His representatives in holiness.
Just because a pastor can make you feel good doesn’t mean he is a good pastor giving you a good message. He may be an ear tickler and you want your ears tickled. Neither does it mean that a ranting, raving Bible thumper castigating his folks is a good pastor with a good message. God comforts when it is warranted but also scourges when it is warranted. Sound doctrine does both at the right time.
It has been said that the train has its most freedom when connected or bound to the tracks. Any place else it tries to run only leads to destruction. The Gospel train is bound to the Word of God rightly divided and the Holy Spirit to empower it in our lives and ultimately to the culture. Trying to run it on one rail or none only leads to the train wreck we see in current Christianity. Only God knows the total death toll both of unsaved and saved. For the unsaved it is the second death and Hell. For the saved, it is the death of vision, opportunities, blessings here, rewards there as well as testimony and even death of relationships as well as untimely physical death.
Indeed, if I follow truly the steps of Christ and the Apostles, I will be a barbarian to my people and culture as they were for I am an Ambassador of my true home and King. Rather then being a tiger I would rather be a young lion in the Lion of Judah’s pride and allow Him through me to destroy the lion that seeks to devour whom he may both in and out of Church.

Don’t lower His standards! The Blood elevated you. Why would you drag person you love most through the mud to impress someone?

Noah was righteous in his wicked age so also should we be in this one.

The wall of Christ’s blood protects you, but if you open a door the wall is useless.

A good rule of thumb is to take the Bible and define your culture and times not let the culture and times define your Bible. Going the other way has caused so many false prophecies and bad calls on when the world will end and who is going to be the Anti-Christ. It has caused two large schools of theological thought that have been at odds for centuries though neither is correct, but each has part of the truth. Both theologian’s eyes blurred and missed the target for they used their times and culture as the cross hairs, not the Bible alone.
These are emotional times and it is hard to maintain balance. Everyone wants answers, but God gives them in His time, not ours. Maintain sound doctrine and see what the Word says, not what you think it says or what you want it to say and answers will come. The Bible is your standard and dictionary of the universe. Make sure you use proper definitions when looking at it. Maranatha!

15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: KJV
It is sad to say that much of what passes for Christianity in this age is the gagging in the back of God’s throat soon to be vomited. So much of it is never offending, be rich and healthy pablum. Oh, it has some excitement and entertainment. It has some noise and colorful characters promoting the vanilla God is all about love and never anger or judgment message.
Well, at least unless you point out their heresy and then they want God to give them a spiritual machine gun to mow down their opponents. Also, if you don’t tithe, they would love to be able to take the non-tithers outside and have the ushers cut them down with Uzis and bury them in a mass grave so that the rest of the church can get the anointing. Odd ducks, these modern preachers of prosperity. Indeed, the god they serve may approve of such thoughts but not the God of the Bible.
If people would actually read the Bible and seek Him many of these preachers would be out of business and have to sell their jets and mansions. The foolishness they preach is very easily disproved, but they make folks feel good and give them hope of reaching the thing they truly love, money.
Have they not read history? Nearly all of God’s people have been poor and persecuted in every land they were and are now found. The Apostles were all martyred, with maybe the exception of John, if the tradition is correct. Where was the prosperity message all these centuries?
Be careful about where you feed spiritually. The message may sound sweet and it may be presented in such a way to make you hunger for it, but you can eat something that went down well, but did not stay down. The same can happen if you eat at a spiritual buffet.
Prov 23:8 The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words. KJV
These preachers are not giving you the cold drink of living water your dry and thirsty soul needs. Neither are they giving you the truth that will truly warm your soul including some things that may seem a bit spicy at first, but cleanse you and invigorate you.
Jesus and the Apostles did not preach soft serve vanilla ice cream. Indeed, they gave sweet words of grace, but they also preached things hard to understand and spoke of the fire of Hell and the judging fires of the BEMA seat for the Christian.
If you have fallen for this false gospel then I pray that you will find a church that is grounded in the Word, not grounded in money or false signs and wonders. You do not want to be vomited out with lads and lassies! Find Jesus and you will have all the wealth you need in Him though you may be poor as a church mouse here on earth.
